LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – For many Texas Tech fans, game day isn’t complete without a stop at Slaton Bakery, where sweet treats have become part of cherished family traditions.
Chief Cookie Officer Chad Wilson says being included in fans’ game day rituals is both humbling and rewarding.
“It’s also kind of humbling that they include us in their road trips to come to the game being a part of their family tradition of taking goodies to see the tailgate or hotel rooms or whatever it’s really an honor,” Wilson said.
The bakery’s popular Guns Up donuts sold out before 11 a.m. Friday, leaving some fans disappointed. But Wilson assures customers there are plenty of other Red Raider-themed options available.
“We sold out of donuts so quick today we have a lot of other items that they’re excited to see,” Wilson said. “We have our red and white thumb prints, petit fours, iced cookies with Tech logos. There’s still plenty to get even if we are out of the guns up donuts.”
Game weekends keep the entire staff busy, with Wilson admitting sleep becomes optional during these high-demand periods.
“Sleep is on the agenda but I don’t know if it’s going to happen,” he said. “We have to take advantage of the opportunity while it’s here. We want to make sure all our goodies for our customers.”
As a Texas Tech graduate himself, Wilson finds energy in seeing fans’ excitement over the bakery’s creations.
Since opening in 1923, Slaton Bakery has been woven into countless game day memories. This weekend, they continue that century-long tradition of making football weekends a little sweeter for Red Raider nation.
