SAN ANTONIO – Students at Thomas Edison High School say sweltering classroom temperatures have made it difficult to focus, as San Antonio ISD works to address what it calls cooling issues in “isolated areas” across the district.
Several students who were off campus for lunch last week said temperatures in one of their classrooms inside the health care building at Edison were well above 80 degrees. They said the room became hot and humid quickly because it was packed with about 35 students.
“If anything, it makes you get over stimulated faster and it makes you not want to be paying attention into class,” one student said.
San Antonio ISD has acknowledged experiencing cooling problems in parts of the district and said crews are working as quickly as possible to address them. The district said it is prioritizing HVAC repairs and adding support as needed. It is also asking staff to close blinds and report any concerns.
The latest complaints come after a series of weather and HVAC disruptions for the district. In January 2024, the district closed all of its schools for several days because of freezing conditions. In May 2024, it canceled classes at two schools due to an air conditioning failure. Similar problems were also experienced in 2025 at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy after a chiller failure.
Questions remain about the scope of the current cooling issues, including which other schools are affected, how many students are impacted, and how the district is addressing the problems.
