San Antonio police are investigating the deaths of two people in separate incidents following severe storms that brought heavy rainfall to the area Friday night.
Police said a man in his 50s was found dead Saturday morning in Woodlawn Lake. Investigators believe he drowned and said they do not suspect foul play.
Officers were called shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday to the area of Cincinnati Avenue after receiving a report of a body in the lake. The San Antonio Fire Department assisted with the recovery.
Police said the man’s death may be related to the storms and flooding.
At a Sunday morning news conference, Acting San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame said authorities also were investigating the death of a 46-year-old woman who was swept away by rapidly moving water Friday night.
Salame said two people were in a drainage area during the heavy rainfall when they were swept downstream. Both were carried several blocks before one person was able to escape the water in downtown San Antonio.
Police and fire crews searched the waterway Friday night but were unable to find the woman. Her body was recovered Saturday night near San Pedro Creek at West Quincy Street and North Flores Street, police said.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities are treating the death as a drowning.
San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and Acting San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame expressed condolences to the victims’ families and described the deaths as tragic.
The identities of both victims had not been released as of Sunday.
