EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Documents revealed the identity of the 39-year-old man who died while in custody at the El Paso County downtown jail on Aug. 1.
According to the custodial death report, James Tavares was found on the floor of his cell, unresponsive, at around 2:40 a.m.
The autopsy report lists the cause of death as a subarachnoid hemorrhage associated with meth and fentanyl toxicity and his manner of death as an accident.
According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine website, a subarachnoid hemorrhage is a brain aneurysm.

According to the custodial death report, jail medical staff and crews from the El Paso Fire Department arrived and started performing life-saving measures until they were directed by Medical Control to stop “resuscitative efforts.”
At 7:59 a.m., an investigator with the Medical Examiner’s Office arrived and officially pronounced Tavares dead at 8:28 a.m.
The report states that the incident was captured on camera by the surveillance cameras as well as officer’s bodycams.
The death is still under investigation; however, no foul play is suspected.

The report also states that Tavares had a pre-existing medical condition and that he was receiving treatment for it after being jailed.
Jail records show Tavares had been booked into jail and charged with aggravated robbery, an offense that allegedly happened on July 27.
Tavares’s bond had been set at $150,000.
Court records show Tavares had a criminal history.
