LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It has been two years since Lubbock moved to a deregulated grid, giving customers the power to choose their own electricity provider and plan.
Anna Delano, community relations manager for Reliant Energy, said renewal season is here for many customers.
“Right about now they’re having to choose do I stay on this plan? What do I do? And so renewal season is here,” Delano said. “What you want to do is check with your current provider if you’re happy. You can typically just give them a call or check online and renew with them. See if you want to stay on the same plan that they offer it or they might have new different plans, but the beauty of being in a competitive market now is you get to choose.”
Check your contract status
Delano said no matter your provider, you should check if your contract has expired.
If you don’t renew, you’ll default to a month-to-month plan, which could cost you more.
“I don’t know this for every electricity company, but most likely you would see a higher rate right now because it is summer and we’re using more,” Delano said. “And it’s all based on supply and demand.”
Power in the customer’s hands
Delano said the power is in the customer’s hands to choose their provider and plan.
“I would just say make sure that you’re taking this opportunity. Deregulation was all about putting power in the hands of our customers,” Delano said. “Get online, give us a quick call, whoever your provider is, and find out and then do your research. Look at the different rates. Now more than ever, you have an opportunity to really find a plan that works with your lifestyle. Do a little bit of research and pick something that works for you.”
Customers are encouraged to ask questions about their rate, plan or provider. Electric plans can be compared at powertochoose.org.
