Several Houston-area school districts and universities are canceling classes Tuesday as a tropical system approaches the upper Texas coast and could strengthen into Tropical Storm Edouard.
Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are forecast for the region as the system moves across the northern Gulf. The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for upper Texas. If it becomes a named storm, it would be the fifth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
Some districts and announced Monday afternoon that they would cancel Tuesday classes because of the threat of flooding and other hazardous weather, including Channelview, Galena Park and Humble ISDs.
On the other hand, some districts — such as Pearland, Tomball and Klein ISDs — announced that schools would operate as normal. Officials in those districts said they would continue to monitor weather conditions in case of any changes.
Southwest Public Schools said they would dismiss students early at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
