A man has been arrested after officials say he told an AI chatbot about wanting to shoot up an NEISD elementary school, court documents say.
According to an arrest affidavit, 22-year-old Nathaniel Michael Carrasco used Anthropic AI to make multiple queries on or about August 11 threatening to kill children at Serna Elementary School. Those messages were not brought to the attention of the Southwest Texas Fusion Center until August 28 from the FBI.
Some quotes from the chat included: “I’m getting a gun as soon as I can, and when Serna Elementary starts, I’m just gonna walk in there and start shooting up kids,” “I hope I can get a gun so that way I can shoot up a f***ing school already” and “I truly do mean my threats.”
The FBI was able to “tentatively identify” the user as Carrasco. Although, the SWTFC completed Emergency Disclosure Requests with T-Mobile, Charter Communications and Google. This information was able to positively identify Carrasco for good.
Carrasco has been charged with terroristic threat against a public servant/public fear, involving serious bodily injury, influence of government. He sits in Bexar County jail with a $250,000 bond, jail records say.
