SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with a 2024 crash that killed his passenger, according to court records.
Jose Luis Ibarra, 25, was convicted of intoxication manslaughter after authorities said he was driving 116 mph while intoxicated before crashing into the back of a pickup truck in the 500 block of Historic Old Highway 90.
San Antonio police said Ibarra was driving a black 2023 Dodge Charger northeast bound on the road on June 28, 2024, when it struck the rear of a 1999 Ford F-350. The Charger caught fire after the crash.
The passenger, identified as Alexandra Jasmine Vargas, suffered burns and broken bones. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
According to court documents, Ibarra told an officer he was driving at a high rate of speed when the truck stopped in front of him. Investigators said no skid marks or steering-input markings showed an attempt to avoid the crash.
A blood test taken after the crash showed Ibarra had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.166, more than twice the legal limit, according to an arrest affidavit. Data from the Charger’s airbag control module showed the accelerator was fully depressed up to a half-second before impact and that the vehicle was traveling 116 mph.
