Higginbotham has added to its retirement plan business with the acquisition of Kansas City-based Two West Capital Advisors.
“Bringing the Two West team on board immediately takes our capabilities in the retirement planning and wealth management space to another level,” said Rusty Reid, Higginbotham chairman and CEO, in a news release. “They bring an established platform, along with a business philosophy and ideals of service that fit naturally with ours.”
The Two West acquisition follows two other recent acquisitions by the Fort Worth agency. In June, Higginbotham expanded into South Carolina by adding Turbeville Insurance Agency, an independent brokerage with four offices across the state and more than 60 employees, and Georgia-based Blanton & Griffin Insurance Agency.
The firm has also recently expanded into Indiana and Alabama and made more vertical acquisitions. In January, it acquired Charter Energy, an Atlanta firm that provides specialty insurance placement and risk management strategies to the energy, heavy industry and private equity clients. In March, Higginbotham added Monarch Solutions Inc. to provide services to high-net-worth clients.
Two West specializes in fiduciary retirement plan consulting, including 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as financial planning and wealth management aimed at small- and middle-market employers. The specialty firm will bring its full team, experience and operating platform to Higginbotham’s retirement planning and wealth management division.
Founded in 2010, Two West was built around the idea of providing retirement plan guidance to small businesses with between one and 20 employees and middle-market firms with 21 to 100 employees.
“I’m the son of entrepreneurs, and I dedicated my career to helping small businesses succeed,” said Marko Ungashick, Two West CEO, in a news release. “When I looked at the 401(k) planning space, I saw a market dominated by generalists, with expertise reserved for the largest clients.”
Two West was designed to bring specialized knowledge and fiduciary responsibility to the middle market, more like the businesses he grew up in, Ungashick said.
That focus made Higginbotham a natural fit, as both firms have built their businesses around serving middle-market employers with capabilities more often reserved for larger clients, according to Ungashick.
Two West will remain based in Kansas City and continue serving its existing clients, with all current employees on board and expectations to add new ones.
The acquisition will give Two West access to Higginbotham’s broader human resources, marketing, legal and compliance infrastructure and gain access to Higginbotham’s national reach and extensive existing business-client base.
