The record-long government shutdown has created uncertainty around flying, as videos circulate online of lengthy TSA lines and as airlines continue to cancel flights in compliance with federally-imposed airspace reductions.

Additional flight cuts are anticipated to climb next week and peak by Friday, Nov. 14 with an estimate of 20 fewer departing flights at Love Field per day and 96 fewer at DFW.

For passengers worried about flight cuts, here’s what to know.

How are North Texas airlines responding to the flight cuts?

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines posted on its website that flights canceled due to the federal air traffic reductions, in most cases, will be automatically rebooked and sent new itineraries.

Passengers seeking to change their new flights (or those who did not receive new ones) can rebook online at no additional cost up to 14 days from their original travel date.

American Airlines, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, is offering free refunds to passengers whose flights are canceled for any reason or for passengers who do not want to travel during the impacted period. The carrier is also waiving fees to change flights for passengers whose trips meet certain criteria listed here online.

How do I check TSA wait times at DFW Airport, Dallas Love Field?

You can download the My TSA app on both major app stores, no matter if you have an android or Apple device.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, open it and you’ll be taken to your dashboard. On the dashboard, you’ll see a tab for “favorite airports.” You can add an airport to your favorites by searching for it under that tab.

Once you add DFW Airport or Love Field to your favorites, it will constantly display a TSA wait time at both airports every time the app is opened.

The app will also tell you whether there are any delays issued by the FAA and whether TSA PreCheck security lanes are open at the airports.

Other tips for travelers

Both DFW and Love Field are encouraging travelers to arrive earlier to the airport due to ongoing construction. Love Field travelers should plan to arrive at least two hours prior to their flight during roadway closures. DFW is encouraging travelers to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and at least three hours before international flights in order to navigate construction.
