As Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, Corpus Christi Beach Rescue is looking back at a busy season on the Gulf — including dozens of rescues and thousands of interactions aimed at keeping beachgoers out of danger.
According to Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation, Beach Rescue has recorded more than 40,000 preventative interactions with beach visitors this season.
Crews have also:
Provided medical aid 186 times
Recorded zero deaths due to drowning
A preventative interaction can include any contact between Beach Rescue and a beach visitor intended to stop a potential safety incident before it happens.
The numbers come as Corpus Christi prepares for another busy stretch along the coast for Labor Day weekend.
Lifeguards remain on duty through Labor Day
Beach Rescue lifeguards will remain on towers along Corpus Christi’s Gulf beaches through Monday, Sept. 7.
The city’s 2026 summer schedule lists Gulf Beach lifeguard towers as staffed daily from noon to 6:30 p.m. through Sept. 7. Mobile patrols also continue during the summer season.
Beginning Sept. 8, Gulf beaches transition to the fall and winter schedule, with mobile patrols operating daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Beach Rescue encourages visitors to swim near lifeguards, pay attention to changing surf conditions, use the buddy system and closely supervise children around the water. The city also recommends life jackets for children and weaker swimmers and reminds visitors to learn what to do if caught in a rip current.
New technology helping Beach Rescue
The city is also investing in new tools designed to improve safety along the coast.
Beach Rescue has purchased a drone equipped with a buoy-dropping mechanism that can assist crews during long-distance rescues and searches for missing people.
A new weather station is also planned for the Windward Parking Lot, allowing crews to monitor conditions and help protect both Beach Rescue staff and beach visitors.
Corpus Christi Beach Rescue is certified through the United States Lifesaving Association.
One last splash before summer ends
Families looking to squeeze in a little more summer fun also have a few more days to visit the city’s splash pads.
Corpus Christi’s five city splash pads are operating on an extended summer schedule through Monday, Sept. 7. They are open on weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will also be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Labor Day before closing for the season.
See You at the Seawall
The city will also wrap up its “See You at the Seawall” Summer Series on Saturday, Sept. 5 at The Water’s Edge.
The free event includes live music, games and food trucks along the Corpus Christi bayfront. The city’s published schedule lists the series finale from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at The Water’s Edge, 602 S. Shoreline Boulevard.
Admission is free, and families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
While Labor Day may signal the unofficial end of summer, city officials are reminding residents and visitors that staying safe remains important anytime they head to the coast.
