ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Salvation Army was presented with a $200,000 grant Tuesday morning by the Texas Veterans Commission.
The funds will be used for general assistance, said Major Joe Burton, Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army in Abilene. This includes mortgage, rent, utilities, and transportation.
“As a former veteran, for me personally, it means a great deal to be able to help those who have served our country and who may have, for some reason, fallen on hard times,” Burton said.
The grant funding primarily comes from Texas Lottery games designated for veteran support, according to a news release from the Texas Veterans Commission.
Tickets cost $2, and the commission receives 50 cents of that, said Ervey Leos Jr., Grants for Veteran Services Director at the Texas Veterans Commission. They are also receiving funding through donations.
Leos Jr., an Army veteran, said it means a lot to him to help other veterans.
“It just means a lot to me, helping brothers and sisters out,” Leos said.
