Dallas Stars 2026-27 season preview

There is a strong Canadian accent to this roster. Wyatt Johnston, 23, out of Toronto, scored 45 goals and led the entire NHL with 30 high-danger goals. Jamie Benn, from Victoria, is back for a 19th season as captain on a one-year, $850,000 contract at age 37. Matt Duchene, the Haliburton, Ontario product, led Dallas with nine points in six playoff games at 35. Between them they represent both what is good about this team and what makes it fragile.

The good is genuinely elite. Dallas led the NHL in high-danger goals for a second consecutive season with 157, ranked third in high-danger shooting percentage at 22.6% and allowed the second-fewest high-danger goals in the league at 100. That combination produced a +122 high-danger differential and a +51 goal differential, both fourth-best in the NHL, per NHL Edge tracking.

The fragile is that Dallas finished 26th in five-on-five scoring chances and leaned on a 28.6% power play and the league’s second-best scoring defence to get to 112 points. Stars Odds: The Outright, the Conference and the Playoff Markets

Three books available to Canadian bettors have the Stars tightly grouped in the third tier of the Cup market. 1xBet and 29Black both post 17.00, while Tonybet is shortest at 16.06.

Three things stand out. First, the outright gap is real money: a $100 stake returns $1,700 at 1xBet or 29Black against $1,606 at Tonybet for the same result. Second, 1xBet makes Dallas the fifth choice in the Western Conference market at 8.50, behind Colorado at 4.40, Edmonton at 5.25, Vegas at 5.80 and Minnesota at 7.50 — the Stars are priced below the team that just eliminated them. Third, the make-the-playoffs number of 1.25 is among the seven shortest on the 32-team board, level with Tampa Bay.

Read together, the market says Dallas is a lock to qualify and a long shot to get out of the bracket. That is a coherent view, and it is also where the mispricing tends to live.

Jim Nill did not add. He removed. Mavrik Bourque, a 24-year-old centre coming off 20 goals and 41 points, was traded to Nashville on 1 July along with defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2028 third-rounder; Bourque then signed a six-year, $33 million contract with the Predators. Michael Bunting, Adam Erne and Nathan Bastian all left as unrestricted free agents. Alexander Petrovic signed in Florida.

The only forward coming the other way was Joel Kiviranta, arriving from Colorado. According to Daily Faceoff, Dallas carries roughly $105.36 million in cap commitments with about $1.36 million of usable space, which explains the strategy and also removes any cushion for an in-season injury.

The reason for the squeeze is Jason Robertson. The 27-year-old led Dallas with 96 points — 45 goals and 51 assists in all 82 games — and re-signed on 21 July as a restricted free agent for one year at $12 million. He can start negotiating his next deal on 1 January 2027, and Miro Heiskanen’s extension is queued up behind it. Robertson and Johnston became the first teammates in Stars history to score 45 goals apiece in the same season.

Health Is the Whole Roster Question

Tyler Seguin, 34, has managed 47 games across two seasons after hip and ACL surgeries but was on a strong pace before December’s injury, with 17 points in 27 games. Roope Hintz tore a hamstring twice by March and still finished in the 91st percentile in high-danger shots on goal despite playing only 53 games. Mikko Rantanen, who turns 30 on 29 October, scored 22 goals in 64 games with 18 of them from high-danger areas, a 95th-percentile mark.

None of those three played a full, healthy season. All three are expected to open camp available, with Seguin telling NHL.com he feels as strong as ever. Glen Gulutzan, in his second stint as head coach, has Alain Nasreddine running the defence for a fifth season and a clear brief: keep the structure, generate more at five-on-five.

Behind them, the pipeline is thin but not empty. Finnish winger Emil Hemming, the 29th pick in 2024, put up 63 points in 46 OHL games with Barrie and is expected to arrive this season. Cameron Schmidt led the WHL with 51 goals.

Oettinger’s Off Year

Jake Oettinger won 35 games, third-most in the NHL, going 35-12-6 with four shutouts across 54 appearances. He also posted a .899 save percentage — the worst of his career and well below his .912 career average — with a 2.59 goals-against average, and his backup Casey DeSmith finished higher at .907. In the playoffs he went 2-4 with a .893 mark.

There is a case that the number understates him: his 27 quality starts tied for 10th in the league and his five-on-five close save percentage of .926 sat just outside the top 10. He is signed for seven more seasons at $8.25 million. If he returns to his career norm behind a defence that already allows the second-fewest high-danger goals in hockey, the Stars have the best goal-prevention profile in the West.

Best Bets and Predicted Finish

Best Bet: Dallas to win the Stanley Cup at 17.00 (1xBet or 29Black) — a top-four goal-differential team with an elite power play, a goaltender due for positive regression and its top six healthy for the first time in two years. Take the 17.00 rather than 16.06; the 6% difference compounds across a season of futures betting.

Value play: Western Conference at 8.50. 1xBet prices Dallas behind Minnesota in this market. Dallas finished third in the overall standings and comfortably ahead of Minnesota in the Central, and it out-created the Wild on shot quality across the full season. If you believe last April’s series was a six-game sample rather than a verdict, this is the cleanest expression of it.

Fade: To Miss the Playoffs at 3.90. Dallas has qualified five consecutive seasons, has finished top two in the Central four years running and returns virtually the same roster. This number exists to balance the book, not to reflect the risk.

Predicted finish: second in the Central Division behind Colorado, 105-110 points, and a second-round exit unless the five-on-five offence genuinely improves.
