EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Marathon Petroleum’s El Paso refinery will host a public meeting next month to provide neighbors with an update on the odor incident that occurred Aug. 4.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at Riverside High School, 301 Midway Drive.
Marathon said the meeting will include details about what led to the odor reported in the community, including the substances released and their quantities. The company also plans to discuss on-site and off-site impacts, air monitoring activities and results, findings from its investigation and changes made in response.
The company said it will also outline steps it has taken to improve notification to the surrounding community.
The Aug. 4 incident led to the release of more than 15 tons of pollutants into the air, according to an updated environmental report previously reviewed by KFOX14/CBS4.
The report listed more than 10,000 pounds of propylene, more than 3,800 pounds of carbon monoxide and about 1,095 pounds of sulfur dioxide among the released pollutants.
Marathon previously said it shut down affected equipment, stabilized the unit and notified the city of El Paso and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The public meeting comes after a Marathon Community Advisory Panel meeting was canceled in late August because refinery leadership was responding to what the company described as an operational situation. Marathon said at the time that incident did not involve injuries or off-site impacts.
