Dallas police published 12 homicide notices during August, each covering one death, and had announced no homicide arrest in most of the cases as of September 1.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, DPD had announced three of the deaths through August 9. The department posted nine more current-case notices before the month ended.

The total does not represent Dallas’ final official August murder count. One notice stemmed from a July 5 assault after the victim died in August, while police did not establish exactly when another victim found August 24 had died.

The count excludes appeals involving older killings. It also excludes three people found dead at a South Dallas home August 31 because authorities had not classified those deaths as homicides as of September 1.

DPD announced murder charges in three cases, said a fourth suspect awaited extradition from Mexico, reported no arrest tied to causing the death in seven cases and planned to send one shooting to a grand jury. A homicide classification does not establish that every death was a criminal murder.

Three murder charges, one extradition pending

Police charged Jacob Sherif, 21, with murder after Jose Hernandez, 21, was shot August 4 on Singleton Boulevard. Hernandez drove away but crashed into a nearby lake and died at the scene.

Josiah Gomez, 21, initially faced an aggravated assault charge after police alleged he pushed Sylvester Victor, 26, down stairs and stomped on his head during a July 5 altercation on Main Street. Investigators upgraded the charge to murder after learning August 6 that Victor had died.

Police also charged Brian Loyless, 41, with murder after Milton Colocho, 35, was fatally shot August 30 on Bruton Road.

In the fourth case, DPD said Jesus Leal Huerta entered a Skillman Street residence August 9, assaulted two minors and fatally stabbed Daisy Moctezuma, 35. Authorities took Huerta into custody in Mexico, where he awaited extradition to Dallas County to face murder and injury-to-a-child charges.

The allegations do not establish guilt. Prosecutors must prove each defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Seven cases without a homicide arrest

Officers found 20-year-old Ricky Johnson with apparent gunshot wounds August 8 on Metropolitan Avenue. Police reported no arrest tied to his death.

Trevaun Neal, 23, died after an August 9 triple shooting on Exline Street. DPD later released video of two people sought in the case. Police separately charged Douston Woods, 37, with interference after he allegedly crossed crime-scene tape, but did not accuse him of participating in the shooting.

An unidentified man died and another man was wounded during an August 21 shooting on South Cockrell Hill Road. Police charged Ashton Hill, 17, with tampering with evidence but did not accuse him of shooting either man.

DPD also announced no homicide arrest after officers found Dulce Santibanez, 40, with apparent gunshot wounds inside a Webb Chapel Extension apartment August 24.

In the remaining cases, an unknown suspect shot 20-year-old Aniya Edwards on August 25 on West Virginia Drive; an unknown suspect fatally shot 24-year-old Grabiel Hurtado-Gutierrez on August 27 on South Polk Street; and two unknown suspects shot 24-year-old Kenneth Turner later that morning on North Jim Miller Road.

Grand jury referral planned

In the final notice, police said a juvenile shot 33-year-old Adrian Ortiz on August 9 on North Buckner Boulevard. DPD said a juvenile shot Ortiz when Ortiz began choking and punching a woman. Police did not announce an arrest and said they would submit a grand jury referral.
