When fall arrives in Plano, cooler days invite visitors outdoors and the city answers with colorful festivals, lively dining districts, nature-filled escapes, and comfortable places to settle in for a weekend. Located just north of Dallas, Plano combines big-city variety with an easygoing pace, making it an appealing home base for the perfect autumn getaway.
The season’s signature celebration is the H-E-B | Central Market Plano Balloon Festival, returning September 17-20 at Oak Point Park. More than 35 hot-air balloons, including whimsical special shapes, fill the field, while evening balloon glows illuminate the park after dark. Live entertainment, family activities, food vendors, and fireworks add to the spectacle. Because balloon activities depend on favorable weather, savvy festivalgoers build flexibility into their plans and leave time to enjoy the rest of Plano.

Autumn’s calendar stretches well beyond balloon weekend. On November 7, the Plano Food + Wine Festival transforms Legacy West into a culinary celebration featuring more than 100 wines, fine spirits, bites from top local restaurants, live chef demonstrations, and shopping from local vendors. Throughout the season, visitors may also encounter outdoor concerts, theatrical productions, artisan markets, Halloween happenings, and special programs at various entertainment venues. Pleasant temperatures make fall an ideal time to explore Plano’s green spaces. The 200-acre Arbor Hills Nature Preserve offers paved and natural-surface trails through prairie and woodland, plus an observation tower with expansive views. On the city’s eastern side, Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve encompasses 800 acres and miles of trails around a scenic lake. Rent a kayak, plan a picnic, or hike a trail. The tree-lined Chisholm Trail is another inviting choice for a walk or bicycle ride.

For a mix of history and creativity, spend an afternoon in the Downtown Plano Arts District. Restored brick buildings now house independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and performance spaces, while colorful murals make the neighborhood especially rewarding to explore on foot. Haggard Park offers a place to pause, and the Interurban Railway Museum, inside a historic train depot, introduces visitors to the electric railway that once connected communities across North Texas. Nearby, the Heritage Farmstead Museum preserves a turn-of-the-century farmstead and hosts seasonal educational programs.
Downtown Plano Arts District
Plano’s dining scene provides ample reason to arrive hungry. In downtown, Lockhart Smokehouse serves brisket, ribs, sausage, and other Central Texas barbecue favorites smoked over post oak. Urban Crust specializes in wood-fired pizza inside a historic building, with a rooftop ice bar that makes an atmospheric stop as temperatures dip.

On the city’s west side, Legacy West and The Shops at Legacy form a walkable dining and entertainment district. Mexican Sugar pairs polished Mexican cooking with handcrafted cocktails, while Half Shells Seafood Grill brings Gulf Coast flavors to the table. For groups who cannot agree on one cuisine, Legacy Hall gathers more than 20 food stalls, multiple bars, and the outdoor Box Garden, where diners can catch concerts and other events.

Set aside time to browse Legacy West, a vibrant open-air destination with an impressive mix of luxury labels, popular national brands, beauty boutiques, home décor, and specialty shops. Shoppers can explore names such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tiffany & Co., Ralph Lauren, Aritzia, Nike, Lululemon, Tecovas, Tory Burch, Tumi, and West Elm while strolling along Windrose Avenue. Restaurants and coffee stops woven throughout the district make it easy to turn an afternoon of shopping into dinner and an evening out.

Nearby, The Boardwalk at Granite Park surrounds a waterfront gathering space with restaurants and inviting patios, making for prime territory for an unhurried fall evening.
