London ISD steps up cleaning as COVID-19 cases increase

London ISD is increasing campus cleaning after officials reported an uptick in COVID-19 cases as infections rise across Texas and the country.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — COVID-19 activity is increasing across the country as students begin the new school year, prompting some districts to take additional precautions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated Wednesday that COVID-19 infections were growing or likely growing in 48 states, including Texas. CDC data showed infections were not declining in any state.

The increase led San Perlita Independent School District in the Rio Grande Valley to suspend operations Tuesday and Wednesday because of what district officials described as the rapid spread of COVID-19. Classes resumed Thursday.

Coastal Bend school districts have not reported disruptions on that scale, but London ISD officials said they have seen an increase in cases.

The district is using equipment purchased during the pandemic to disinfect its campuses and help prevent the virus from spreading.

London ISD interim Superintendent Amanda Barmore said staff members have resumed using fogging machines as a precaution.

“They’re actually the foggers that we bought whenever COVID was going around,” Barmore said. “So, we have those. We’re just doing it again as a preventative — it worked back then, working now.”

Barmore encouraged students, families and staff members to practice good hygiene at school and at home.
