EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 65-year-old man was arrested in El Paso after investigators said a home remodeling job led to allegations of deceptive business practices.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Humberto Camarillo following an investigation that began when a victim reported hiring him to perform remodeling work at a residence.
Investigators said that after receiving an initial payment, Camarillo allegedly requested additional money. Deputies said he later stopped responding to calls and messages and the agreed-upon work was not completed.
Investigators gathered evidence and obtained an arrest warrant for Camarillo for deceptive business practices. While trying to locate him, deputies discovered he was also wanted on two additional warrants for the same offense.
On Sept. 1, deputies located and apprehended Camarillo. He was booked into the Downtown Detention Facility on three warrants for deceptive business practices. His total bond was set at $10,000.
The sheriff’s office reminded residents to use caution when hiring individuals or companies for home repairs or remodeling projects.
The agency encouraged residents to research contractors, verify credentials and business information, get a written agreement detailing the work and payment terms, and use caution when asked to provide additional payment before the agreed-upon work is completed.
