LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock Christian dual credit students are connecting with members of an older generation as part of a class project on intentional relationships.
The high school and college students read a book called “Theo of Golden” about intentional relationships. They were then tasked with connecting with a resident at Carillon, a Lubbock senior living community, and writing a paper about what they learned.
High school senior Paden McCuaig was paired with Carillon resident Scott Roberson. McCuaig said he was a little nervous to talk with someone he’d never met.
“Always, but I mean, once you get to know someone, it’s easy, like small talk. And I mean, once you get their story, it’s just perfect,” McCuaig said.
McCuaig titled his essay “Couple Goals” after learning about Roberson’s love for his wife, Betty, a relationship that has lasted through long distance, war and new chapters. The couple of 60 years just started a new chapter at Carillon.
“And that’s all it is, is a new chapter. We’re still vibrant enough and seeking excitement as much as we can handle,” Roberson said.
Roberson calls the senior living community a cruise ship that never leaves the dock. He said it never hurts to get company from people like Paden, who will look him in the eyes.
“So many times, my generation, when we are involved with you, it is you’re talking like this [looking at his phone]. You’re talking to me, but you’re, [points to Paden’s eyes] and this right here makes a whole lot of difference,” Roberson said.
Teacher Melanie Whiting takes care of two seniors at home, including her 96-year-old grandmother.
“It’s really hard for me to be up here and to not get emotional about it because the kids are leaning forward, right? They’re interested in the conversation. They’re making eye contact,” Whiting said. “And so when I see relationships that are being intentionally built between those generations, it just makes my heart warm.”
Roberson shared pieces of advice with McCuaig, like trouble is pretty easy when you have two to fight and good always wins out.
“Happiness is not Lubbock, Texas, in the rearview mirror,” Roberson said.
McCuaig said there’s a lot he’ll cherish from his newfound friend.
“I think just the relationships and wisdom he’s given me and they’ll always be with me forever,” McCuaig said.
