The moment autonomous driving enthusiasts have been waiting for is finally here. After months of public testing and speculation, Tesla is preparing to officially take the wraps off its dedicated Cybercab robotaxi.

The Cybercab represents the next phase of Tesla’s autonomous ambitions. Designed from scratch as a purpose-built two-seater, the vehicle completely ditches the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, brake pedal, and any other form of traditional controls. It’s built to serve as the scalable backbone of Tesla’s commercial Robotaxi fleet, eventually replacing the modified Model Y vehicles currently handling driverless rides.

Not a Tesla App

Tesla teased the event for months before revealing last month that it would take place in Austin. Days later, Tesla confirmed the September 3 Cybercab event date and sent invites to attendees. It even ran a sweepstakes that gave Robotaxi riders a chance to win an invite to the event.

Anticipation kicked into high gear after James Bickford, Tesla’s Director of Global Sales for Residential Energy Products, posted a teaser on X stating that “it’s going to be an exciting 48 hours.” With the main stage presentation likely lasting only a few hours at best, the teaser suggests Tesla could have more surprises planned over the coming days.

We expect the Cybercab to officially join the commercial Robotaxi fleet during or immediately following the event. A recent Robotaxi app update rolled out support for Cybercab rides in Austin, confirming that the two-seater is ready for passenger duty.

Tesla has already been testing steering wheel-less production Cybercabs in Austin for months, so attendees will almost certainly receive demo rides around downtown Austin, marking the first public passenger trips in the vehicle.

Expect the presentation to focus heavily on fleet economics, operating cost per mile, charging logistics, and rider safety rather than typical consumer powertrain figures since the Cybercab isn’t really aimed at customers. While Tesla maintains that individual customers will eventually be able to purchase a Cybercab, retail pricing, consumer order books, and delivery timelines are unlikely to be detailed today, keeping the spotlight firmly on commercial ride-hailing.
