AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Pets Alive! is bringing in dozens of cats and dogs from Livingston, an East Texas community hit by severe flooding after the remnants of former Tropical Storm Edouard moved through the region.
The nonprofit said a small rescue organization in Livingston reached out Wednesday night asking for emergency help after its limited foster network began flooding. In response, Austin Pets Alive! said it is transporting 15 cats, nine Chihuahuas and about 12 other mid-sized dogs to its main shelter facility.

Among the animals is a dog that became so frightened during the storm that it jumped through a closed window, suffering multiple cuts, according to the organization.
A local veterinarian stabilized the dog, which is expected to make the trip to Austin along with the other animals.
The transport is expected to arrive at the shelter around 3 p.m., the organization said. Austin Pets Alive! is asking community members to come to the shelter to foster the incoming animals, noting that intake could be slow because the animals are likely to be anxious after the ordeal.
Vaccinations will be administered as part of the intake process before the animals are placed with foster families.
The organization said that even if the transported animals haven’t yet arrived or completed intake, fostering or adopting animals already in its care would help create space for the new arrivals. Austin Pets Alive! is also accepting donations to support the effort.
