Why Your Post Is Not Actually Anonymous
I am an admin for groups both on Facebook and Reddit. We can see who the anonymous poster or commenter is with very little work on our part. The reason we are allowed to see it is so that we can do our job- moderate- when people are abusing the feature to be unkind, annoying, or to spread misinformation or outright lies. And plenty of people do use that feature this way.
Why Am I Telling You This?
Because social media is exactly transparent about this. I’ve never seen a warning about moderators being able to see where an anonymous post is coming from until I became one. I would never use this ability against someone unless, of course, someone was in danger because of it; then I would contact the police. I am very morally against doxxing for any other reason. However, anyone can be made a mod of any group, and you may not know that the girl who hated you in high school can totally see that it’s you critiquing her sourdough loaf. And I feel like you have the right to know that.
When To Use Anonymous Posting
When you are in a group you trust, and when the information can’t reasonably be traced back to you by the details you disclose in the post/ comment. But honestly? If it’s a post or comment that could come back to bite you in a serious way, I just wouldn’t post it at all.
