SAN ANTONIO – The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District board has approved a plan to fill a vacant trustee seat, setting an application window that begins Friday.
During a called board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, the SCUC ISD Board of Trustees approved a process to appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacant Place 4 position. The board also formally accepted the resignation of Place 4 Trustee Matthew Short.
Under SCUC ISD board policy, the remaining trustees may fill a vacancy by appointment until the district’s next trustee election. State law also allows a board to order a special election but does not require one. Because more than one year remains in the Place 4 term, the vacancy must be filled within 180 days.
The board chose the appointment process rather than holding a separate election before the next regularly scheduled SCUC ISD trustee election in November 2027, with the goal of restoring the board to its full seven-member membership.
SCUC ISD last used an appointment process in 2018 following the resignation of Trustee John Corrieu. Current Board President Letticia Sever was appointed to fill that vacancy.
“Having joined the Board through this same appointment process, I understand both the responsibility of serving and the importance of providing qualified community members a fair opportunity to be considered,” Sever said. “We are looking for someone who is prepared to learn, work collaboratively and remain focused on serving every student in SCUC ISD.”
Applications for the Place 4 appointment will be accepted from Sept. 4 through Sept. 14, 2026, according to the district. SCUC ISD said application materials, eligibility requirements and complete information about the appointment process will be posted on the district’s website by noon Friday, Sept. 4.
