CYPRESS, Texas – Animal cruelty investigators rescued 19 animals Wednesday from a Cypress-area home where they were being kept inside a garage during extreme heat, according to the Houston SPCA.

Harris County Constable Precinct 1 deputies assisted with the response. Investigators said 17 dogs were found in rusty cages contaminated with feces and urine. The dogs included French bulldogs, a breed especially vulnerable to heat because their short noses can make it harder to cool down.

Several larger dogs were also found at the property, including a mother with multiple puppies. Officials said the garage lacked suitable conditions for the animals to safely endure the high temperatures.

The unexpected rescue also involved two reptiles: an American alligator and an albino red-eared slider. Investigators said both were being kept in unhealthy conditions inside the garage.

The animals were removed as officials documented the scene and collected evidence for an ongoing animal cruelty investigation. The Houston SPCA urged anyone who suspects animal abuse or neglect to report it at HoustonSPCA.org.
