LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A thousand American flags now stand at Huneke Park, representing the roughly 3,000 men and women who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Lubbockâs first responders worked with Prosperity Bank to place the flags near 82nd Street and Nashville Avenue Thursday morning.
The display gives the community a chance to reflect on the attacks, the victims and the first responders who died that day.
Officials said 2,753 people died in New York, including 343 firefighters who were trying to rescue people from inside the Twin Towers. Another 184 people died at the Pentagon, and 40 died in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after sacrificing themselves to stop a fourth plane from reaching its destination.
The flags will remain on display at Huneke Park for the public to view over the next week.
