EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — As the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz continues to pressure the oil market, drivers in El Paso are seeing gas prices climb heading into Labor Day weekend, forcing some to rethink traditional holiday road trips.

For many families, Labor Day travel often means getting on the road. But with gas prices at record highs nationally, some El Pasoans said higher costs are changing their plans.

“They’re insane, especially for this Labor Day weekend. People can’t travel, they got to take out a loan to pay for gas,” Isaac Holguin said.

One El Paso driver said the jump has been dramatic compared with just a couple of years ago.

“In 2022, it would take $25 to fill up my tank. And now it takes about $60 to fill my tank,” she said.

AAA reported gas prices are at a record high for the holiday weekend nationwide.

The national average for regular gas is $4.14 a gallon, topping the previous Labor Day record set in 2012, when the national average reached $3.82.

In El Paso, the average price for regular gas is about $3.95, according to AAA.

Diesel is even higher, averaging about $5.80. Both averages are above what drivers are paying across Texas, AAA said.

At some El Paso gas stations, drivers are paying even more at the pump.

With many households already feeling higher costs at the grocery store and in other everyday expenses, some residents said they are cutting back on travel to make ends meet.

“A lot of stuff has gone up, not just gas and food,” Holguin said.

There’s stuff that we got to cut back on that’s probably traveling, to afford gas or food.

Others said they may still travel, but only if they can keep the trip short.

“It’s a matter of whether we do a short, small trip to Arizona, that’s usually where we go, so that might be where we head out, but at this point we’re not sure,” Elisa Hock said.

With gas prices showing no signs of easing, some El Pasoans said they plan to stay closer to home this Labor Day weekend.
