LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains remains locked in a relentless hot and – mostly – dry pattern. There is a slight change this holiday weekend – it won’t be quite as hot as recent days. It is, however, going to be a hot 3-day weekend. Even the pattern of a few afternoon and evening storms will evaporate.

Saturday will be another scorcher with highs rangine from upper 90s to just above 100 degrees. The hottest area, as shown in on the map, will again be off the Caprock.
While there’s a small chance for a few afternoon and evening storms Saturday, that will be confined to the western KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. The rest of the region will remain dry. Any storms that do develop may produce quick downpours and strong wind gusts.

As high pressure increases Sunday and Monday, Labor Day, any chance of rain will dry up. both days will be hot and dry.
The work and school week starts off the same, with temperatures continuing to run around five to ten degrees above average for early September.

Once again, if you’re planning outdoor activities make sure you and yours stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the afternoons, and use plenty of sunscreen, and take breaks from direct sun.
On This Date
On this date in 1971, high winds, hail, and heavy rain, struck the Kirkland area east of Childress causing extensive damage to both property and crops. In Kirkland, one vacant house was blown down and half of the post office roof was blown off.
