SAN ANTONIO – With no threat of severe weather moving in, Week 2 of the Texas High School Football season played out smoothly.
The Brennan Bears delivered a dominant defensive performance in Week 2, shutting out the Reagan Rattlers 63-0 at Ferris Stadium, with key plays including a scoop-and-score touchdown by Jonas Brewster and an early score by Jayshawn Mitchell.Brennan’s head coach, Stephen Bazer, praised his team’s response after a recent loss, noting that multiple turnovers contributed to a “complete game” and helped even up their record at 1-1 as the team aims for a strong season run.The Friday Night Fever roundup highlighted several other notable San Antonio area games, such as Hutto’s high-scoring victory over Judson (67-41), Johnson’s impressive win against Austin Vandegrift (38-7), and Madison’s continued defensive streak in a 21-0 shutout of John Jay.Young standout players emerged this week, including Taft’s freshman quarterback Diego Garcia and Johnson’s electric sophomore Braylon Allen, who scored two touchdowns and energized his team’s big win.Week 2 featured smooth play across the region with no weather issues, and additional key results included blowout victories by Alamo Heights (43-13 over Somerset), Southwest Legacy (47-17 over Burbank), and Central Catholic continuing their undefeated run at 2-0 with a 42-15 win over Southside.
Defense dominated and big plays stood out as Week 2 of Texas high school football brought intense matchups to fields across the San Antonio area.
The Brennan Bears evened up their record in spectacular fashion with a 63-0 shutout over the Reagan Rattlers at Ferris Stadium. Brennan capitalized on an early special teams error when Jayshawn Mitchell found the end zone from close range. The Bears’ defense stayed aggressive, highlighted by Nehemiah Lopez forcing a loose ball that Jonas Brewster scooped up and returned for a touchdown. Brennan led 49-0 at halftime and never looked back, showcasing what head coach Steven Bazer called a complete performance.
“You know, I’m really pleased with the way we responded,” Bazer said. He described coming off a loss and focusing on correcting crucial mistakes. “We want to really rebound and play a great game. And I felt like we played a complete game,” Bazer said. He praised his team for forcing turnovers, saying, “Makes it a little easier to be successful when you get those kinds of turnovers and whatnot. But really proud proud of how we bounced back and you know just responded from a loss.”
In other action, the Hutto Hippos outpaced the Judson Rockets 67-41, while the Johnson Jaguars rolled past Austin Vandegrift 38-7 behind scoring from sophomore Braylon Allen and a key interception by Jacob Mazzocco. East Central topped Roosevelt 40-14. The Madison Mavericks kept John Jay scoreless, winning 21-0 and extending their defensive streak after shutting out New Braunfels Canyon the previous week.
Churchill held a 27-20 lead against Clemens late and the Taft Raiders, led by freshman quarterback Diego Garcia, claimed a 37-27 win against Eagle Pass. Dripping Springs shut out the Harlan Hawks. Brandeis was delayed by weather in Laredo, while Stevens trailed Del Rio in the fourth quarter. At Comerlander Stadium, the Legacy of Education Excellence Volunteers won 33-7 over Kyle Lehman, coming back after an early interception by the Lobos.
New Braunfels Canyon topped New Braunfels 29-18 in a rivalry showdown. Southwest Legacy surged past Burbank 47-17 and Davenport, a team on the rise, dominated Leander Glen 58-12. Wimberley beat Fredericksburg 28-3 and Buda Hayes shut out Seguin 54-0. Cuero claimed a 35-28 win over La Vernia, with both teams known for recent playoff success.
Other scores included the Randolph RoHawks over Pleasanton 48-13, Antonian Apaches defeating Edison 48-6 and Central Catholic improving to 2-0 with a 42-15 win against Southside.
