EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso’s Adopt-A-Street pilot program has completed its first phase and is now open to the public, inviting community groups, businesses, and individuals to select a street segment and organize cleanups.
Through the program, participants sign a two-year volunteer agreement to maintain a one-mile segment of minor arterials or collector roadway by completing at least four cleanups per year, the City said.
There is no fee to adopt a street segment. As recognition for these efforts, the City will install signs along adopted segments to acknowledge participants and their commitment to the community.
“Litter doesn’t just affect how our streets look, it affects how our community feels,” said Randy Garcia, director of Streets and Maintenance. “Adopt-A-Street gives residents and organizations a simple, hands-on way to take ownership of a corridor they care about and make a visible difference, cleanup by cleanup.”
The pilot program is modeled after successful efforts in comparable cities and supports the City’s focus on improving the “visual impression” of key gateways, corridors, and minor arterial roadways, the City said.
It also reinforces a shared responsibility between the City and the community to maintain and enhance public spaces, the City added.
