A young child died after getting hold of an unsecured gun and accidentally shooting herself at a Fort Worth apartment complex Saturday night, police said.
Officers were called about 7:45 p.m. to the Patriot Pointe Apartments in the 2100 block of Revolutionary Way, off Southeast Loop 820 in south Fort Worth, police spokesperson Officer Buddy Calzada said.
The girl, who was between the ages of 3 and 5, was treated by medics on scene and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Based on the preliminary investigation, police believe the shooting occurred in a patio area and at least one adult was present at the time, Calzada said.
Detectives are investigating who the gun belongs to and how the child got it.

The child will be identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police encourage residents to secure their firearms and use gun locks, Calzada said.
