EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/ CBS4) — Drivers on Thorn Avenue in Northwest El Paso are beginning to see changes designed to reduce confusion over lane markings after residents raised concerns and officials revised the roadway design.

A viewer flagged the issue along Thorn from Doniphan Drive to Redd Road, saying, “On thorn from Doniphan to Redd there’s an empty line that ends in a bike lane. It doesn’t line up, if you’re in the far right lane what are you supposed to do?”

City officials said the confusion stemmed from how the original design aligned with nearby state work.

“So we just had to modify that. And that’s where the concerns from the public came because when we did the original design, it didn’t fully match up with TXDOT,” said Randy Garcia, the City of El Paso’s director of streets and maintenance.

Adjustments have already been made under the updated design. The Thorn bridge is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s I-10 widening project, but once TxDOT completed its bridge work, the project shifted to the city of El Paso.

City and TxDOT officials said they revisited the plans and approved a new approach aimed at addressing public concerns and improving continuity for drivers.

“If any of that changes, we have to match that up to what we have on our road and then, ensure that it matches up to wherever, wherever thorn leads to.– So the, the main part is ensuring that you have a seamless path of travel,” Garcia said.

The city said the adjustments are minor but more consistent, and officials said signage in the area will be updated.

Lane confusion can be reported through 311 so crews can investigate.
