Fall coffee menus are dropping like leaves as we officially enter the “-ber months.” And another signal that summer is finally coming to a close? A cold front – which could be on its way to South-Central Texas sooner rather than later. Here’s when the Lone Star State can expect that much-awaited dip in temperature.
According to the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office, Texas’ monthly forecast is likely to have the state’s first significant cold front of the fall in store this September. In a post on X, the NWS local office said while hot summer temperatures tend to persist, “the month often features the region’s [South-Central Texas] first significant cold front of the fall and better chances for rain than August.” Additionally, “September in South-Central Texas typically brings early fall cold fronts, cooling highs from the mid-90s to upper 80s and lows into the mid-60s. Average rainfall rises to 2 to 4 inches with minimal severe risk,” the NWS said.
However, don’t break out the scarves just yet. This month, you can expect “warmer-than-normal conditions” despite the chance for cooling off. The NWS anticipates highs falling from the mid-90s into the upper 80s, with a few days reaching triple-digit temps. As for the lows, expect temperatures to fall from the mid-70s into the low 60s. Around this time of year, the coldest night typically floats around the 55-60 degree range.
As we move later into the year, the odds of a “super El Niño” are only getting bigger, according to reports. For one, the Climate Prediction Center estimates a roughly 95% chance of one coming to fruition between October and November. The super El Niño is set to bring rainier-than-usual precipitation to Texas this fall and winter, which could also mean more cold days on average. One meteorologist told MySA that Texans can expect those rainy days and cooler temps to arrive by the end of September.
