SAN ANTONIO – A law student is recovering after she says a truck hit her from behind on Highway 151 Thursday night, leaving her car upside down near where Military Drive passes over the freeway.
Amethyst Delgado said she crawled out of her badly damaged vehicle after the crash.
“I remember just squeezing the wheel, and I closed my eyes,” Delgado said.
Delgado said the truck driver left the scene.
“When I came out, there was nobody there. It was just me and my car upside down,” Delgado said.
Hit-and-run crashes remain a major concern in Texas. One study ranked Texas eighth in the country for fatal hit-and-run crashes over a decade.
Federal crash data show Bexar County had 153 fatal hit-and-run crashes between 2019 and 2024.
Nationwide, 15% of all police-reported crashes involve a driver who fled the scene, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Delgado said losing her car has made it difficult to get to her two jobs while also attending school. Still, she said she is thankful her injuries were not more serious.
“Yeah, they said I was really lucky. I have no broken bones. All I have is some really bad bruising,” Delgado said.
Delgado said she was hit by a driver who fled the scene two days ago and is grateful to have only minor injuries. A GoFundMe has been created to help her get back on her feet.
