An East Texas deputy got the kind of surprise that no amount of academy training really prepares you for after approaching what he apparently believed was a dead deer. The animal suddenly sprang to life, prompting a scream that may now follow him around the department for quite some time.
In the clip shared by 12NewsNow, the deputy can be seen moving toward the deer before it suddenly starts moving. His immediate reaction is a loud, high-pitched, “Ahh, it’s alive!” as he recoils from the animal.
There is something uniquely effective about being startled by something you had mentally filed under “definitely not moving anymore.” Add darkness, an isolated roadside, and a deer suddenly deciding it has unfinished business, and the reaction becomes a little easier to understand.
Still, body cameras have a way of preserving moments that coworkers would otherwise have to describe from memory. In this case, the deputy’s scream was captured perfectly, and the internet wasted very little time appreciating it.
The Deer Gets the Last Laugh
Please give the following video a moment to load completely.
The clip’s entire charm comes from how quickly the situation flips from routine to ridiculous. One second, the deputy appears to be dealing with an animal he assumes is dead, and the next he is jumping backward while announcing the deer’s return to the living in a voice several octaves higher than expected.
There does not appear to be any indication that the deer was actually dead and somehow revived, of course. More likely, the animal was stunned, resting, or otherwise motionless long enough to convince the deputy that nothing dramatic was about to happen.
That assumption lasted right up until the deer moved. Whatever the explanation, the animal managed to turn one quiet roadside encounter into a clip that 12NewsNow says went viral.
The deputy also deserves at least a little sympathy here. Plenty of people would probably make a similar noise if something they believed to be a carcass suddenly got up in the middle of the night.
Comments and Reactions to the Texas Deputy’s Deer Scare
Commenters immediately focused on the one thing the deputy probably already knew: his coworkers are never letting this disappear. “He’s never going to live that down,” one person wrote, while another imagined every dispatcher listening to the call “melted out of their chairs.”
Others sided with the deputy and admitted they probably would have reacted the same way under the circumstances. One commenter noted that being alone in the dark with a deer you thought was dead suddenly moving is a perfectly reasonable reason to freak out, while another summed it up as the moment he learned he was “a flight not fight kind of guy.”
Naturally, the deer got its own fictional backstory too, with commenters joking that it had been napping, had warrants, or was simply playing opossum. One person called the whole thing a “Reno 911 moment,” which feels about right for a clip where the most memorable line is a lawman shrieking, “Ahh, it’s alive!”
