U.S. 77 southbound is blocked near Driscoll after 18-wheeler jackknifes

The truck struck an unoccupied pickup on the shoulder near County Road 12 before jackknifing, officials said.

DRISCOLL, Texas — An 18-wheeler crash shut down southbound U.S. 77 near Driscoll on Friday, forcing drivers off the highway while crews worked to clear the scene.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Sgt. Rob Mallory, the 18-wheeler, failed to stay in its lane and struck an unoccupied pickup truck parked on the shoulder near County Road 12.

The 18-wheeler then jackknifed, blocking the southbound lanes.

The driver of the 18-wheeler suffered minor injuries, according to Nueces County Constable Precinct 3.

Southbound U.S. 77 remained closed following the crash, with traffic being rerouted onto Business 77 through Driscoll. DPS earlier said drivers were being diverted off the highway at FM 665 and could re-enter at FM 3354.

Nueces County Constable Precinct 3, Nueces County ESD 3, DPS and the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash.

DPS is investigating what led to the crash.
