HOUSTON – A woman died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Westheimer Road in west Houston late Saturday night, according to the Houston Police Department.
The crash happened around 11:51 p.m. near the 12900 block of Westheimer Road. Investigators said a group of women was crossing the roadway to reach a nearby club. The group was not using a designated crosswalk when a vehicle hit one of the women.
The woman was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, where she was later pronounced dead. Police said she appeared to be in her 20s, and they withholding her identity until next of kin is notified.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The driver was detained and questioned, and authorities said there were no immediate signs of impairment.
HPD Sgt. Mike Barrow emphasized caution, saying the department has seen an uptick of crashes involving pedestrians.
“We’ve been having a lot of auto-pedestrian-related crashes, and it’s been upticking lately in the summertime. So we just ask people to please use designated crosswalks and watch where you’re going as you’re going across the roadways,” Sgt. Barrow said.
Police said a large crowd gathered after the crash, and tensions escalated. Officers separated those involved while the investigation continued.
