Police say the man had arrived at Memorial Hermann seeking help for suicidal thoughts before the late-night encounter
HOUSTON – A man in his early 30s was shot three times by a hospital security officer Saturday night after authorities said he grabbed a knife inside the emergency room at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital at 921 Gessner Road.
According to Houston police, the man arrived around 6 p.m. seeking help and told staff he was suicidal. Hospital employees treated him and placed him in a secluded area of the emergency department.
Shortly before 9 p.m., the man pulled out a knife. Security officers tried to restrain him and deployed three Tasers. He fell after the final Taser was used, and a security sergeant moved in to remove the weapon.
Police said the man regained consciousness and grabbed the knife again. The sergeant then fired his weapon, striking the man in the torso.
Medical personnel immediately began treating him. He was expected to be transferred to another hospital for additional care.
Hospital staff recognized the man from previous visits for other medical issues. Police said they were not aware of any prior trouble involving him at the facility.
The Houston Police Department is investigating.
