San Antonio education nonprofit fights to keep city funding as budget vote approaches

The San Antonio Education Partnership says potential funding cuts could put scholarships at risk for thousands of local students.

SAN ANTONIO — A local nonprofit that has helped San Antonio students pursue higher education for decades is urging city leaders to protect its funding as a deadline to approve the city’s 2027 budget approaches.

The San Antonio Education Partnership says it has supported students for 37 years, providing scholarships and other resources to help them continue their education.

Last year alone, the organization says it provided more than $2 million in scholarships. Nearly 3,000 students across the San Antonio area rely on its support.

Now, with city leaders discussing possible funding cuts for local nonprofits as San Antonio faces a significant budget deficit, the organization is worried some of that support could disappear.

The partnership says cuts could especially hurt students already in the middle of earning their degrees and make higher education less affordable for others.

The nonprofit has been sharing information about its work online and encouraging supporters to raise awareness as City Council prepares to make its final budget decisions.

City Council is expected to vote on the 2027 budget Thursday, Sept. 17.
