BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and lost food because of recent storms and power outages have more time to request replacement benefits, state officials announced Monday.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) said the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved an extension that provides Bexar County SNAP recipients until Sept. 17, 2026, to report food loss and apply for replacement benefits.
Funds are expected to be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days after a request is received.
The deadline extension increases the time to report food loss from 10 days to 20 days, according to HHSC.
“As families across Texas recover from recent severe weather and flooding, it is critical that they have the support they need to rebuild,” Gov. Greg Abbott said in a news release. “SNAP replacement benefits will help families replace food that was lost or destroyed as we deliver all available resources to affected Texans.”
How to apply for SNAP replacement benefits
SNAP recipients can request replacement benefits by:
Calling 2-1-1 and selecting a language, then Option 7.
Visiting a local HHSC office. To find an office, click here and select “Find an Office” at the bottom of the page.
SNAP recipients for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) may also request benefits for food purchased with September WIC benefits that were lost because of power outages or storm damage.
