The peace of a relaxing Labor Day weekend was broken by one mom on social media.

Let’s recap in case you’re new to this. A mom complained that her child had to see a nude piece at the First Friday Art Trail. It was later pointed out to her that she had walked past a sign that said “18+.” Even she recognized the error, but that didn’t keep everyone on local social media from stirring the pot or contributing a hot take.

Is Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail For Kids?

Personally, I never thought of the First Friday Art Trail as being “for kids.” I would say the bulk of the crowd is young adults having cocktails while drifting from place to place. That really doesn’t seem like a kid-friendly environment to me.

I have never heard anyone describe the event as “family friendly,” but in fairness, the LHUCA website does show kids checking out some of the exhibits. So I guess it’s a bit of a coin flip deciding exactly who the target audience is.

Personally, I wouldn’t take a kid there. I’d save that trip for an entirely different event, like the Lubbock Arts Festival.

My bigger concern is that this is already showing signs of becoming a political football, with the mayor himself expressing concern on social media.

Even then, I don’t really care what the ultimate outcome is.

What I care about is that we’ve now given local politicians something else to focus on instead of the things that really matter.

Whatever decisions are made regarding the Art Trail are not going to fill the potholes around town. They’re not going to affect the crime rate. They’re not going to improve traffic, fix infrastructure, or solve any of the other problems people deal with every day.

That’s where I think this whole thing gets ridiculous.

One person had a bad experience. It appears there was a warning sign. She admitted she missed it. That seems like something that could have ended right there.

Instead, because it happened on social media, everybody had to pick a side, and now politicians may feel the need to pick one too.

I hope Lubbock will do better and focus on bigger issues.

Sadly, I don’t think it will.
