ODEM, Texas — A 9-year-old girl was ejected from a car after the driver hit a cow and rolled into the median on US 77 north of Odem Monday night, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS Sgt. Harold Mallory said the crash happened around 8:12 p.m. as a 2023 Mazda CX-3 was traveling south on US 77.
The driver saw a cow in the roadway and tried to avoid it, but struck the animal, Mallory said. The impact sent the Mazda into the center median, where it rolled over and ejected the 9-year-old passenger before coming to a stop upright.
HALO-Flight flew the girl to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
The driver, a 46-year-old Corpus Christi man, and a 53-year-old woman who was also a passenger were taken by ambulance to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline.
San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera first shared information about the crash on Tuesday morning, saying the adults were the 9-year-old girl’s grandparents.
Rivera said everyone survived the crash. DPS continues to investige.
