Texas has spoken: Which college football fan base is the most obnoxious?

  • September 9, 2026

There’s a new No. 1 in Texas, and it’s a title no college football fan base actually wants.

A new statewide poll asked Texans which college football fan base they consider the “most obnoxious,” and the answer came down to one of the state’s biggest rivalries.

Texas A&M fans took the unwanted crown, narrowly beating out University of Texas fans.

According to the Overton Insights survey sponsored by the Texas Public Policy Foundation, 29.7% of likely Texas voters picked Texas A&M as the state’s most obnoxious fan base.

UT wasn’t far behind. 27.4% picked the Longhorns.

After the two SEC rivals, the rankings took a significant drop:

University of Houston: 11.2%

Texas Tech: 10.3%

Baylor: 9.6%

SMU: 6.7%

TCU: 5.1%

So, Houston, your Cougars landed in third place, which is either a compliment or a warning depending on who you ask.

The poll also found a pretty interesting political split.

Among Republican voters, 31.9% said UT fans were the most obnoxious, compared with 24.1% who picked Texas A&M.

Democratic voters flipped the script: 37% picked Texas A&M, while 20.9% chose UT.

And among voters who identified as neither Republican nor Democrat, Texas A&M led UT 38.2% to 23%.

The biggest plot twist may be coming from younger voters.

Among Texans ages 18 to 29, Texas Tech actually took the top spot with 24.1%.

Texas A&M followed at 20.4%, UT was at 18.2% and TCU came in at 17.3%.

That means if the younger generation gets its way, the college football “most obnoxious” crown could eventually be heading to Lubbock.

The poll was conducted Aug. 24-26 among 1,167 likely Texas voters. Respondents completed an online questionnaire, and the results were weighted to reflect the state’s likely-voter population.

Of course, this is all just for fun — but with college football season officially underway, we’re guessing some fan bases may have a few thoughts about these results.

And if you’re a Texas A&M fan reading this…

Congratulations!
