Where Costco goes, fanfare follows. After major openings in New Braunfels and Liberty Hill this year, another booming Texas community is set to welcome the big-box retailer.

Wylie, located northeast of Dallas in Collin County, could soon begin construction on a $42 million Costco development. The Washington-based business submitted plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on Wednesday, September 9, calling for a $40 million Costco Wholesale and a $2 million fuel center.

Construction on the combined $42 million project is set to begin October 12 and is expected to be completed by August 6, 2027, according to the TDLR filings. That timeline is tentative, as all TDLRs are subject to change without notice.

Wylie, like many other suburbs in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, has seen a population surge in recent years. The city’s population has grown from 43,484 in 2013 to 62,434 in 2023, according to the City of Wylie. Niche gives Wylie an A rating, earning praise for its public schools, diversity and family-friendly setting, with only slight knocks for housing, nightlife and crime/safety.

As far as shopping, Costco will compete with Kroger, Walmart and Target once it opens. Prior to this, Wylie residents would have to drive to Rockwall or Plano to shop at Costco, or devour its famous hot dogs.
