LUBBOCK, Texas (KFDA) – West Texas A&M Women’s Soccer kicked off Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday evening, earning a 1-1 road draw against Lubbock Christian.
The Lady Buffs seized control almost immediately with aggressive high pressure.
Just seconds after kickoff, junior Sienna Hurrell forced an LCU turnover deep in the Lady Chaps’ defensive third, intercepting a back pass to the goalkeeper and tucking it into an open net.
Hurrell’s strike came just 16 seconds in, marking one of the fastest goals in program history, to give WT an instant 1-0 advantage.
Controlling the Pace
Energized by the early strike, WT commanded the opening portion of the match, firing two more shots on frame and creating opportunities off set pieces.
The Lady Buffs nearly doubled their advantage in the ninth minute, but an apparent second goal was disallowed following an offsides ruling that stood after review.
Defensively, WT suffocated the Lady Chaps for most of the opening half, conceding just two shots over the first 40 minutes before withstanding a brief, late flurry by LCU to carry a 1-0 edge into halftime.
Weathering the Equalizer & Late Push
Lubbock Christian carried late first-half momentum into the second period, ultimately finding the equalizer in the 63rd minute when Kali Guy converted a short corner kick.
Lady Buff goalkeeper Franciezca Blancaflor kept the match level with consecutive critical saves over the ensuing seven minutes.
Despite recording two additional shots and a late corner kick in the closing minutes, the Lady Buffs settled for the point on the road.
