San Antonio drivers, beware: The Texas Department of Transportation plans some major closures around the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange on the Northwest Side, for this weekend and beyond.
TxDOT said it will close all lanes of eastbound Loop 1604 at the interchange from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, as it continues work on a long-running project to expand Loop 1604 across the North Side.
The agency will also make nightly closures of all lanes of I-10 at the interchange between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. During those hours, the eastbound and westbound frontage roads for I-10 will also be closed.
The westbound lanes of Loop 1604 will remain open through the weekend, as will the frontage roads for that highway, going both ways.
TxDOT has also announced a long-term closure for that area: Starting at 5 a.m. Monday, it will permanently close the entrance ramp for eastbound I-10 south of the interchange “to accommodate future roadway improvements.”
A new exit ramp is expected to open this year as work progresses, the agency said.
Detours will be available for the closures, with signs leading the way.
The closures are being made as part of TxDOT’s $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which will expand the highway from four to 10 lanes across a long stretch of the North Side. The project broke ground in 2021 after being mired for years in funding and environmental regulatory problems. TxDOT expects to complete it in 2028.
The project includes the construction of a $463 million new interchange linking Loop 1604 and I-10, replacing the cloverleaf design dating to the 1980s, which has come under strain as San Antonio’s North and West sides have boomed in population.
