A Friday night storm left its mark across parts of the San Antonio area, with large hail and strong winds damaging cars, homes and fences.
Storms swept through the area late Friday, September 11, bringing heavy rain, lightning and hail to communities on San Antonio’s East Side and beyond. The National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office received reports of dime- to golf ball-sized hail in the Paloma subdivision, about 4 miles south-southeast of Converse, between 10:05 and 10:15 p.m.
By Saturday morning, the damage was hard to miss. Photos shared with MySA showed dented vehicles, shattered windows and damage to homes across the area.
Near FM 78 and Walzem Road, Alison Emmert-Limon said strong winds tore part of the roof off her home, leaving what she called an “unwanted skylight” in her son’s bedroom.

Marissa Kanak shared a photo of her Jeep with its rear window shattered, saying about an inch of rain also made its way inside.

Also near FM 78 and Walzem, Lizz Allmon said hail came in sideways and “sounded like a tornado” as it battered the siding of a home.

The hail came after forecasters warned of isolated showers and storms across South-Central Texas on Friday. In a forecast discussion, NWS said rain chances could linger into the evening, particularly for areas east of I-35.
Friday’s storm also comes as the National Weather Service warns South-Central Texas could see a more active severe weather pattern this fall. NWS meteorologist Mack Morris previously told MySA that strong El Niño years tend to bring more hail and wind reports than La Niña years
