Houston police say a 20-year-old man stabbed his brother, then fatally shot his father and himself during a northwest Houston apartment standoff.

HOUSTON — A 20-year-old man shot and killed his father before turning the gun on himself during a standoff at a northwest Houston apartment complex last week, according to Houston police.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Garden Oaks Village Apartments on North Shepherd Drive. Police said the 20-year-old first stabbed his brother during an argument before barricading himself and his disabled father inside their apartment.

Investigators said the man then fatally shot his father before shooting himself. At some point during the standoff, the apartment caught fire.

The suspect’s brother was taken to a hospital and was last reported to be in stable condition.

The incident left residents frightened and at least two apartments heavily damaged.

Gerson Nunez, who lived above the apartment where the suspect and his father were barricaded, described the suspect as aggressive. He said he had previously seen the man carrying weapons and firing guns in the complex’s parking lot. Nunez described the other family members as good and peaceful.

Nunez spent Saturday removing furniture, beds, televisions, clothing and other belongings from his fire-damaged apartment.

Other residents who witnessed the police and SWAT response described a frightening scene.

“Everybody was screaming, everybody was running, and, you know, everybody was scared,” resident Alberto Gayoso said.

Police have not said what caused the apartment fire or what led to the initial argument between the brothers.

Police have not released the names of the suspect and his father.
