A person suspected in a Plano homicide investigation led authorities on a car chase Monday that ended in a fiery crash and standoff on Interstate 35 near the border of Denton and Cooke counties, authorities said.
The events began Sunday night, when Plano police were called around 10:15 p.m. to a shooting at a home in the 1100 block of Lakestream Drive. Officers found a person who had been shot multiple times. Plano Fire-Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Other family members were inside the home but were not injured, police said. The suspected shooter left before officers arrived.
Plano police spokesman Jerry Minton said detectives later located a vehicle connected to the suspect and set up surveillance on it. When the vehicle started moving Monday, Plano police asked the Texas Department of Public Safety for help.
Shortly after 10 a.m., authorities were pursuing the vehicle northbound on I-35 from Denton County, according to Valley View police. A DPS trooper tried to stop the driver, who Valley View police say fired at troopers before fleeing.
The chase continued north into Valley View, where the vehicle crashed on I-35. Officers surrounded the vehicle during a standoff before it caught fire, Valley View police said.
Minton, with the Plano police, said a body was found inside the vehicle, but Plano police were waiting for the medical examiner’s office to make a final identification before saying with certainty who the person was.
“We can’t say for 100% who the person is,” Minton told The Dallas Morning News.
Valley View police said the suspect was later confirmed dead at the scene.
Police haven’t publicly identified the homicide victim or the suspect. Plano police said the victim and suspect knew each other and that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident with no apparent ongoing threat to the public.
DPS is investigating the crash and pursuit. Plano police said they are coordinating with the state agency before releasing additional information about what happened.
Authorities have not yet said what caused the crash or how the vehicle caught fire.
The incident shut down I-35 in both directions for several hours Monday and drew dozens of law enforcement officers to the area. The Denton County Sheriff’s Office helped with traffic control.
Southbound lanes reopened shortly after noon, and northbound lanes reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
Valley View police said its officers assisted with the incident but that DPS and Plano police are handling the investigations.
