The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to end an attempt by U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Houston, to impeach President Donald Trump, marking the eighth time that the South Houston congressman has tried and failed to boot Trump from office.
Green introduced a resolution last month to impeach the president for his aggressive immigration crackdown, which has resulted in the deaths of several U.S. residents, including Houstonian Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was killed by federal immigration agents in Magnolia Park in July.
After Green forced the House to hear his resolution, representatives voted Tuesday to table it by a vote of 232-147, effectively killing the impeachment effort. In comments delivered ahead of Tuesday’s vote, Green acknowledged that the odds of impeachment were slim but framed his attempt as a moral obligation.
“I realize there are many people who are opposed to what we are doing,” Green said in a Monday press conference. “They will acknowledge that the what the president is doing is impeachable but they would have us wait. Well, the Constitution doesn’t have a wait clause in it.”
Green’s prior attempts to impeach Trump, for reasons ranging from Trump’s offensive comments to U.S. strikes in Iran, have all been tabled or lost votes by similar margins.
A year after redistricting, are Texas Republicans still set to flip 5 seats?
In his final months in office, Green appears to have embraced his status as a lame-duck congressman, introducing himself on the floor of Congress Tuesday as an “unbought, unbossed, liberated and unelected Democrat.”
The longtime Houston representative will leave Washington in January after losing the Democratic primary for the 18th Congressional District to Rep. Christian Menefee.
Green’s seat in the 9th District, which he held for 21 years, will go to Republican Alex Mealer or Democrat Leticia Gutierrez after Texas lawmakers redrew the congressional map in 2025, forcing both Green and Menefee into the redrawn 18th district.
