Tesla ‘Cybercabs’ coming to San Antonio streets

  • September 16, 2026

SAN ANTONIO – Tesla’s newest self-driving taxis are officially headed to San Antonio streets.

Known as Cybercabs, the vehicles are hard to miss. Several gold-colored models are already parked in a lot off Heimer Road near Highway 281 and Bitters Road, close to San Antonio International Airport.

San Antonio City Council approved Tesla’s request earlier this month to use a parking lot near the airport to launch its self-driving service.

Tesla’s robotaxi service launched in Austin on Sept. 3 and has since expanded to Dallas and Houston. San Antonio marks the latest city to join the rollout.

The Cybercabs join Waymo, which began operating in San Antonio at the start of the year but has been paused since April after one of its vehicles drove through a flooded intersection.

When asked about its status in the city, Waymo said its service remains paused but hinted an update may be coming.

One notable distinction between the two self-driving services is their underlying technology. Tesla relies on cameras for its autonomous driving system, while Waymo uses sensors.

As for when San Antonio residents can actually use a Cybercab, that remains an open question. KSAT 12 reached out to Tesla about when its robotaxis will begin accepting passengers in the city and will update this story when the company replies.
